Uvs sea buckthorn Geographical Indication

Uvs lake is located not far from the center of Uvs province, which is 1382 km away from Ulaanbaatar city, the westernmost part of Mongolia. Uvs Lake is the largest mineral lake not only in Mongolia, but also in Central Asia, which belongs to the non-flowing basin of Central Asia.

Uvs Lake Basin is a pristine area with rare flora and fauna, including all natural zones. It was registered in the United Nations International Biosphere Reserve Network in 1997, in the World Heritage Network in 2003, and in the Ramsar Convention in 2004. In the basin of the rivers flowing into Uvs Lake, there is a natural distribution of wild sea buckthorn, which is about 70% of all sea buckthorn in Mongolia. The basin has an extreme climate with temperatures as low as -58 degrees in winter and +45 degrees in summer.

First, in 1964, scientists led by Dr. (Ph.D) B. Laagan established the first sea buckthorn garden and began cultivating sea buckthorn fruits in this region. In the early 1970s, a study conducted by Dr. (Ph.D.) L. Tsendeihu, a lecturer at the University of Mongolia, found that the sea buckthorn in the Great Lakes Depression or Uvs lake basin is more oily than the sea buckthorn in other regions, which is due to the climate of the region, it is noted that it is directly related to geographical features. Based on these and other historical facts, experience and resources of research work, in 2007, "Uvs Chatsaragana/sea buckthorn Geographical Indication" was formulated and registered with the Intellectual Property Office of Mongolia and received a certificate.

Since then, based on the results of research and laboratory tests carried out in Mongolia and abroad, the NGO "Uvs Province Seabuckthorn Producers' Association" has established the geographical name "Uvs chatsargana/Uvs Seabuckthorn
